Florence business man, Zane Ziemer, dies at 80Zane Irl Ziemer, 80, passed away May 21, 2009, of age-related causes.He was born November 18, 1928, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Irl and Guenevear Ziemer. The family moved to Florence in the summer of 1935.In his high school years, Zane enjoyed playing basketball, baseball and swimming. Being a volunteer fireman, he spent his graduation night fighting a fire. With the outbreak of World War II, Zane joined the Navy and from 1946 to 1948 he had the tough assignment of being stationed in Hawaii.The family owned Ziemer's Chevron which Zane took over after the passing of his father Irl. Later it was sold to his sister and her husband then to his niece and her husband, and is now known as Hoberg Muffler Center.Zane had various business ventures after that. He was part owner of Surf Mobile Homes, sold cars for Art Smith and then became a real estate broker, owning several firms over the past 25 years. He was involved in many community organizations, served on the Florence City Council and was a Port Commissioner for many years. His favorite pastime was writing what his wife Janis called "poison pen letters" to the editor of the Siuslaw News.Zane loved Florence, living here almost his entire life and raising his family here.Zane is survived by his wife Janis of 38 years; children Forest, Becky, Teresa and Aaron; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and his sister Wanda and her husband Gary Hoberg. A memorial service will be held at the Florence Ward Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Saturday, May 30, at 1 p.m.Memorial donations may be made to the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, of which Zane was a life member, or to the Ian Foster Scholarship Fund, through the Siuslaw School District office.Arrangements are being made by Burns's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home.
